Ivan A. Hernandez, MD named Medical Director for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine

Ivan A. Hernandez, MD has been appointed as the Medical Director of United Memorial’s Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center. The Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center opened in October 2011 at UMMC’s North Street Campus. In this role, Dr. Hernandez will provide quality patient care and leadership to the multidisciplinary wound care team through mentoring and coaching.

Dr. Hernandez earned his doctor of medicine degree from the University of Havana and completed his residency at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO. A fellow at Albany Medical College, Dr. Hernandez became Chief Resident of Surgery at Albany Medical Center. Dr. Hernandez has been a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Angiology, the International College of Surgeons and the International College of Angiology; and a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and the American Academy of Wound Management.

Dr. Hernandez brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new position in Batavia. He and his wife, Martha lived in the Schenectady, NY area for several years where he maintained a practice as a Vascular Surgeon. For the past three years, he served as the Medical Director for Mobile Hyperbaric Centers, Inc. for Seton Health in Schenectady. He also served as an Active Surgeon and presided over the Wound Care Center at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady until 2009.

United Memorial’s Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center is staffed by certified wound care specialists who provide thorough evaluation, individualized treatment plans and coordinated care. The center provides many treatment options including topical treatments, debridement of wounds, compression dressings and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Typical wounds cared for at the Center include diabetic foot ulcers, non-healing surgical incisions, pressure ulcers, burns and arterial ulcers.

Specialized treatment of non-healing wounds reduces infection, amputation rates and hospitalizations. United Memorial’s Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine Center is the only comprehensive center offering this important care in the Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming County region.
