Maternity Services
At UMMC, we believe that childbirth is one of life's most important and natural events. We believe each person involved should be supportive of the family expectations within the realm of safety, to assure that the birth experience is a positive one. We consider our involvement in your birth experience to be one of honor and privilege.
Our maternity patients are placed in private labor and delivery rooms and are cared by our specialized labor nurses. Along with your healthcare provider, your own personal labor nurse will support and educate you on the birth process.
We encourage birth plans by the expectant parents as a useful tool in preparing for the wondrous event. Options range from no medications to epidurals but either way your experienced labor nurse will support you with comfort measures, breathing techniques, massage, and position changing. Walking is a natural way to help your baby move down the birth canal and dilate your cervix. Showering, rocking in a rocking chair, using a birth ball, and frequent position changes are encouraged to facilitate the labor process as long as your medical condition allows.
If needed, we have our own specialized operating room for caesarean sections where a pediatrician is available at birth to safely assess the new baby.
After the miracle has occurred we allow time for bonding and celebrating your new addition. We encourage you to take lots of pictures! Your labor nurse will stay with you for an additional hour while you recover. This is a great time to experience breastfeeding your new infant while assistance is close at hand. A nursery nurse will weigh the infant, measure the length, and do a complete head to toe physical of your baby. During this time matching bracelets will be applied to you and your little one. The baby's footprints will be printed and the staff will happily print a set for your "baby book" if you desire.
Our postpartum unit has many skilled and caring nurses, educators, and a certified breastfeeding consultant that are available to make you comfortable and to answer any question you may have. Take advantage of this quiet time to get to know your tiny bundle of joy. Take part of her care, learn to feed her, bathe her and gently rock her to sleep. A newborn channel is provided on your television with many different educational segments.
Dads are always welcomed and accommodations are made to spend the night if desired. Although we encourage mothers to have their babies room-in, UMMC offers a newborn nursery, available for those mothers wishing maternal rest. UMMC offers the nursery as a safe location with highly trained registered nurse all certified in neonatal resuscitation as well as adult resuscitation.
The staff at UMMC knows that having a baby is both a wonderful experience and a time when families need much support and education. Our support services provides mother and families with the assistance they need before, during and after pregnancy. Our gift shop is Batavia's leading source for sales and rentals of breastfeeding pumps and related products.
As an obstetrical unit- you may visit us for other women's health issues. You can feel confident that your nurse is experienced in caring for gynecological patients in all stages of life. We will work closely with your health providers and individual wishes to make this a comfortable stay.
