Surgical Expansion Project Opens
United Memorial Medical Center began utilizing the new surgical expansion space on Tuesday, January 4, 2011. A ceremonial ribbon cutting and community open house was held in December to celebrate the completion of the $20 million surgical expansion project at the North Street location.
Several hundred community members attended the event. Guests toured the new surgical area and viewed technology demonstrations as well a lobby, community gallery and admissions area.
The expansion has added 44,000 square feet to the front of the Genesee County’s only hospital. It houses five new, state-of-the-art operating suites, 19 recovery beds, gift shop, waiting area and a new main lobby. The new construction also provides a protective awning covering the patient drop-off area.
The first surgical procedures were indeed performed on time as expected on January 4th. When arriving at UMMC between the hours of 6AM and 7PM, patients and visitors to United Memorial should utilize the parking in front of the Hospital entrance and enter the facility through the new front doors. The Admissions Area has been relocated to the new space for the convenience of patients. A Greeter’s/Information Desk will be regularly staffed to assist patients and visitors with finding their way through the facility.
The new gift shop called “The Shoppe” and the coffee kiosk are now open. To better serve our staff and visitors, the cafeteria at North Street has extended its hours and offerings to include breakfast items. The cafeteria added a second cashier and now accepts credit and debit cards. The cafeteria is open seven days a week.
